- Early Settler Taken By Death Excerpt from Colfax, Washington Paper, date July 12, 1909
Goalman Hubbard, a pioneer of Washington and Oregon, died at his home fourteen miles West of Colfax sunday A.M. after an illness of several months, with liver and kidney trouble, and the funeral will take place from Hall's Undertaking parlors in colfax Tuesday afternoon at 2:30. The Rev. W.J. Powell of the Baptist Church of Palouse officiating.
Mr. Hubbard was born in Pike County, Missouri, March 24, 1830, and moved with his parents in 1836 to Illinois, from which place he crossed the plains by ox team to Oregon in 1847. Lured by the tales of the fabulously rich gold discoveries in California in 1849, he joined the Argonauts then pouring through Oregon from the East into the gold fields, but fortune failed to smile on him and in the following year he returned to Oregon and followed farming near Dallas, until 1890, when he moved to Whitman County and located on the farm where he lived when he died.
But before that he saw service in the Cayuse war as Captain of a volunteer company raised in the vicinity of his home in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. On Setpember 9, 1858 Mr. Hubbard married Miss Nancy Jane Smith, who survives him, and there was born to them ten sons and five daughters, all of whom, except one son, Jim, are living.
He was one of the veteran Democratic figures of the County and a familiar attendant at all county conventions. His sterling worth and active interest in policitcal affairs made him an influential man in the community where he resided.
- Early Settler Taken By Death Excerpt from Colfax, Washington Paper, date Dec. 27, 1928
Mrs. Nancy Jane Hubbard who crossed the plains by ox team has lived in Whitman county 28 years.
Mrs. Nancy Jane Hubbard, 86, widow of Goalman Hubbard, died last night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Schreiber, six miles west of here. Mrs. Hubbard, while a child, crossed the plains by ox team with her parents, from Pike county, Missouri, to what is now McMinville, Oregon. The trip overland required about six months, and there were about fifty wagons in the emigrant train. They left Missouri, April 18, 1847 and arrived in Oregon City right after Christmas that year.
Mr. and Mrs. Hubbard were married in Oregon on September 9 1858, and came to Whitman County in 1900, settling on Union Flat, 14 miles west of Colfax. Fifteen children were born to the couple and 13 survive. There are nine living sons: Samuel H. Hubbard, Bonanza, Oregon; McClelland Hubbard, Corvallis, Oregon; D.R. Hubbbard, Deep Creek, Wash; John Hubbard, Cottage Grove, Oregon; Thomas C. Hubbard, Colfax, Wash; Chas. A. Hubbard, Colfax, Wash; Joseph C. Hubbard, Endicott, Wash; Lee F. Hubbard, Asotin, Wash; Metz Hubbard, Monmouth, Oregon.
There was one other son, Jim, who died. Her eldest daughter Laura died April 9, 1925, in Colfax, Wash. she was Mrs. Sam Cassedy, formerly Mrs. William D. McCabe. The remaining four daughters now living are: Mrs. Hannah H. Tetherow, Independence, Ore., Mrs. C.A. (Nettie) Wilbur, Fallon, Nevada; Mrs. Ben A. Davis (Jemima) of Belleview, Wash., and Mrs. Frank Schreiber (Grace) of Colfax, Wash.
Mrs. Hubbard has 62 grandchildren and 60 great grandchildren, and two great, great grandchildren.
The funeral services will be held at the Bruning Chapel in Colfax Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. J.H. Dickson, pastor of the Colfax Baptist church officiating. Burial will be at Colfax.
- The following history of the pioneer Hubbard family of Polk county was prepared for the local chapter of the D.A.R. by Mrs. Hulda Savery, at the request of Mrs. Nancy Jane Hubbard, a descendant of this family. My father, Absolam Smith, writes Nancy Jane Hubbard, was the son of Ira and Susan Smith (her maiden name was Means.) My mother, Hila was the daughter of James and Hannah Kimsey. She was born January 27, 1810 in Alabama. My grandfather, James Kimsey, was born in Kentucky May 30, 1784. Grandmother Hannah Kimsey was born in Kentucky April 26, 1784. They crossed the plains to Oregon from Missouri in 1847, settling on a donation land claim near where is now Gerlinger station in Polk county, where they passed the remainder of their lives. He was a Baptist minister. I was born in Howard county, Missouri, July 17, 1842. I crossed the plains with my parents in 1846. My father took a donation land claim near what is now known as Smithfield in Polk county, Oregon. I had four brothers and one sister, Henry, James, Thomas and Samuel. My sister is Mrs. Emily Byerley, of Newport, Oregon. I was married to Goalman Hubbard in 1858. He was the son of David and Hannah Hubbard (his mother's maiden name was Morrow). His father was a baptist minister. Fifteen children came to bless our home. All were born near Dallas and Smithfield, in Polk county. Our baby was 23 years old before we were called on to part with any of them. Their names and birth dates are as follows:
Laura Hubbard, born August 29, 1859, married W.D. McCabe, lived in Colfax, Wash., now deceased.
Samuel H. Hubbard born October 25, 1860.
McClellan Hubbard born Feb. 22, 1862. He married Della Smith, lived near Corvallis Oregon.
David Riley Hubbard, born October 16, 1863, married Nannie Cain, lives in Deep Creek, Wash.
Hannah Hilah Hubbard born November 11, 1865, married Dr. W.S. Johnson, lives in Newberg, Oregon.
Nettie A. Hubbard, born December 28, 1866, married D.S. Brotherson, lives in Fallan, Nevada.
John V. Hubbard, born September 11, 1868, married Emma Martin, lives in Cottage Grove, Oregon
Thomas G. Hubbard, born August 18, 1870
James I. Hubbard, born June 16, 1872, married Jessie Proctor, died 1909
Charles A. Hubbard born March 27, 1874, married Genevieve Ringer, lived in Colfax, Washington
Mima E. Hubbard, born January 4, 1876, married B.A. David, lives in Bellevue, Wash.
J. Grace Hubbard, born October 17, 1877, married Frank Schreiber, lives in Colfax, Wash.
Joe C. Hubbard, born October 3, 1879 married Minnie Dollarhide, lives in Endicott, Wash.
Lee F. Hubbard, born August 8, 1881, married Gertrude Ripley, lives in Spokane, Wash.
Metz Hubbard, born July 16, 1883, married Sadie Dunbar lives in Spokane, Wash.
I have 51 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren. I am a widow and I find the last stretch of the long, long trail a very dreary and lonesome journey when traveled alone. I am at home to my friends at the home of my daughter, Grace Schreiber, in Colfax, Wash.
