Census records for 1860, 1880 and 1900 indicate that Mary Louisa Cook Allen was born in New York. She was probably the Louisa Cook living with her aunt and uncle, Luther and Esther Markham, in the 1850 census of Worcester, Otsego county, New York, aged 7. Mary Louisa married B. F. Allen in Marion county Ohio in 1861. Louisa, her husband, and small children stayed behind when her father and step-mother moved to Story county, Iowa in 1867.

Dr. Benjamin F. Allen and Sarah Cook Allen followed Giles and Ruth Ann to Lafayette, Story Co., Iowa sometime between 1871 and 1879. In the 1880 Lafayette, Story Co., IA census daughter Eliza is shown with a birthplace of Ohio and age 9, while her younger sister, Lucia, is shown with a birthplace of Iowa and age 1. An older son, William W. Allen, married Len "Tini" Nelson in March, 1885 in Story County, Iowa. Dr. Allen delivered their first child, a daughter, born 27 Sep. 1886 in Story Co., Iowa.

Lightning struck the Allen home in 1885, "Lightning followed a telegraph wire to Dr. B. F. Allen's house, Tuesday morning and tore off a window casing with some lath and plaster, but did no other damage.-(July 22, 1885.)". (A HISTORY OF STORY COUNTY, IOWA Carefully Compiled, from the Earliest Settlement to the Present. March 1, 1887. By WILLIAM G. (A HISTORY OF STORY COUNTY, IOWA Carefully Compiled, from the Earliest Settlement to the Present. March 1, 1887. By WILLIAM G. ALLEN: NEVADA, IOWA, DES MOINES, IOWA PRINTING COMPANY, 1887., pg. 188)

Louisa's father, Giles Cook, passed away in 1890. In his will he leaves half of his estate to his daughter, Louisa, wife of Doct. B.F. Allen, now residing in Washington Territory. (Will of Giles Cook, Story Co., Iowa). There is also a bequest to Dora Brady, his granddaughter.

Louisa and her husband, Benjamin Allen, appear in the 1900 census in Seattle, King's county, Washington. Also living with them is a married daughter, Eliza Macklin and her husband, John.
